So, what is upholstery?

In simple terms it is the covering of furniture which can be in your home, pubs, bars, clubs, office, home, shop etc. Upholstery protects your furniture whilst also improving the aesthetic appeal and appearance.

In the early days wool, cotton, animal hair and skin were used for traditional upholstery. Now in modern times upholstery is done with fabric, leather, plastic, synthetic material, cold foam and cushion.

Upholstery now uses high quality materials to ensure furniture is protected and looks attractive and more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Upholstery techniques have improved and are still improving. The experts here and contract joinery and upholstery are constantly updating our skills.

Where is Upholstery found?

Upholstery can be used for so many pieces of furniture including the following:

Sofas – Upholstery of sofas includes the cushioning of the sofa, springs will then be installed. Once the springs are done the sofa is covered with the chosen fabric or leather and the pillows are stuffed also.

Chairs, benches, booths – Chairs can be upholstered also with fabric or leather and re cushioned and stuffed to ensure the seating is comfortable v

Beds – Beds use upholstery however it’s not as common to use reupholstery on beds.

Office upholstery – This is an extension of home furnishing upholstery and is used to ensure office spaces are kept inviting and comfortable.

Basically, upholstery refers to the materials that are used to cover our furniture which includes padding, coil springs, webbing, fabric or polyurethane foam. It makes our furniture not only more visually appealing but also more comfortable. Without upholstery furniture would just be the bare skeleton. Upholstery helps to make furniture give a lasting impression and helps to create the overall ambience of a room. Comfort is also improved with good upholstery as we all know sitting on a plain wooden chair is much different to sitting on a comfortable soft upholstered chair, this makes it understandable why upholstery is so worthwhile.

Upholstery helps to make furniture more versatile and is easily customised to your own unique tastes and requirements. You can control the fabric, pattern, shape and colour of your furniture by using upholstery so your furniture matches your individual tastes and personality.
